Broncos Lose Kubes

Playoff-bound teams and impersonators alike were able to pad their records at an astounding rate this season against the likes of Detroit, Kansas City, and St. Louis.
Between Lane Kiffin at Tennessee and openings at Clemson, Washington, Syracuse, Mississippi State and Purdue, there are fertile jobs out there.

The home playoff loss to Pittsburgh was a bitter pill to swallow on Sunday. But the biggest issue facing Denver this off-season isn’t weather or not to sign a crybaby, loudmouth receiver, but how to replace offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak as he will leave the team to take the head coaching position at Houston.
Anyone who knows anything about the Denver Broncos knows that Gary Kubiak served as a fantastic coordinator under Mike Shanahan for the last 11 years. Also, Kubes was the back up to some guy named John Elway (ever heard of him?) from 1983-1991. Kubiak has a great offensive mind and it was only a matter of time before he landed a high-paying head coaching gig in the NFL.
I remember in 1989 when Denver went to Washington to face the Redskins on Monday Night Football. Elway had dinner at the White House the night before and came away with food poisoning. Stinkin’ president! So Kubiak stepped in and guided the Broncos to a 14-10 victory. He was always ready, steady, and professional.
If you think Denver would have won ANY Super Bowl’s with a different offensive coordinator in 1997 and 1998, well you’re just smoking something. Kubiak and Shanahan combined to wear down the Packers in XXXII, and then made the Falcons look just plain silly in XXXIII. Sure they call Shanahan the “Mastermind,” but Kubiak certainly had a lot to do with that aura.
Finally, after years of speculation, Kubiak has taken a head coaching job and is leaving Denver. It seems like every year since Denver won the Super Bowl Kubiak has been on the minds of owners around the league to take control of their up-and-coming team. Kubes was smart enough to run full-speed away from the CU gig a few years back, and he stayed in Denver proving his worth and escalating his value every year. Now, this is finally the time for Kubiak to move on. It could probably be a better situation in some people’s minds, but I think this is just perfect. Kubiak is taking over a Houston Texans team that grossly under-achieved this season – David Carr and Domanick Davis really should have been better. He has money to spend and a very high draft pick, so the potential is there. Also, after the dismal season the Texans had, the patience will be there too. Look for Kubiak to have this team in the playoff hunt in just a few years. I mean, just look what he has done with Jake Plummer this season.
OK, so I’m sad that we’re losing a great offensive coordinator in Denver. Actually, I’m a little scared! I mean, who will be able to take this guy’s place? However, I am really excited for Gary Kubiak. I know he’ll be successful in Houston – they couldn’t have found a better guy.
