As training camp approaches there are many questions left unanswered for the 2005 Cleveland Browns. “Who will start at running back?” is one of those many questions. Many speculate that Lee Suggs is the front runner for this years starting running back, while others feel Reuben Droughns will be the Browns premier back. One player forgotten by many is William Green.

Green, a former first round pick by the Browns in 2002, has had a bumpy ride in the NFL. In 2003, it appeared that Green was on the right track. The Browns had won two of their last three games and Green had rushed for over 300 yards in those games. One week later, Green was arrested for driving under the influence and caught with marijuana. The NFL suspended Green for four games by the NFL for violating his treatment in the leagues substance abuse policy. In 2004, Green was ejected along with Joey Porter of the Pittsburgh Steelers for an altercation that they had on the field.

In March, it appeared that new Browns General Manager Phil Savage and Head Coach Romeo Crennel would waive or trade Green before the 2005 NFL Draft. Now it appears that Green is contending for a starting position. “William Green has been here every day. I mean, every day,” head coach Romeo Crennel said. “He's worked extremely hard. He has improved himself physically. He's stronger and in better condition. I think he’ll be competitive when we get to training camp. He’ll be in the mix.”

Green has proven that he can run in the NFL. As a rookie running back in 2002, Green rushed for over 700 yards and 5 touchdowns in the final 7 games. This helped lead the Browns into the postseason for the first time since their return. The question isn’t can he run, it’s can he fight the demons that have haunted him in the past?
