It has been reported by Yahoo! Sports that the New York Giants are in talks with the Cleveland Browns to acquire star wide receiver Braylon Edwards. Terms of the deal have yet to be finalized or even agreed upon, but the report says any deal would include a combination of the Giants’ second and fifth round draft picks and a receiver. Players mentioned to be part of the potential deal would most likely be Steve Smith or Dominik Hixon.

If the Giants are able to come to terms on a deal with the Browns, they will have acquired an extremely adequate replacement for the recently released Plaxico Burress. It has been widely documented that the Giants need an elite receiver who can stretch the field and take the pressure off Eli Manning and the running game. Now that they have cut ties with Burress, adding Edwards would solidify the teams receiving core and be a step in the right direction.
While trading Steve Smith or Dominik Hixon would be difficult as both have become solid contributors, the opportunity to add a player of Edwards’ stature remains too good to pass up.

Edwards, drafted third overall in the 2005 NFL Draft, is a product of the Michigan Wolverines system. After an impressive college career, he has become a talented professional capable of putting up big numbers. In his first four seasons, Edwards has 228 receptions for 3,558 yards and 28 touchdowns. These numbers are impressive but could have been even better if he was more consistent. He had six touchdowns or less in three of his four seasons, a far cry from the numbers he put up in his break out season of 2007 when he had 80 receptions for 1,289 yards and 16 touchdowns all career highs. If Edwards can duplicate the success he enjoyed during the 2007 season, and mature as a player, he will prove to be a deadly threat and an asset to the New York Giants.

One thing is for sure, if the Giants are able to add Braylon Edwards, they can count on maintaining the level of success offensively that they have enjoyed recently.
