2008 Season Preview: Houston Texans
Their faulty secondary and iffy running game is a bad combo for both holding leads and winning close games against quality opponents, but they are sneaking closer into the playoff picture.
H-Town Hope
These certainly aren’t your father’s Texans. Not your mother’s, or even yours, for that matter. It’s not necessarily that the Houston Texans, the NFL’s laughingstock since their inception in 2001, are 2-0, though that is quite amazing in itself.
2007 Season Preview: Houston Texans
The Texans will sputter to a 5-11 finish, thus earning a shot at drafting a true playmaker like Darren McFadden and vaulting into legit playoff contention in 2008.
2007 Draft Review: Houston Texans
The Texans had far more needs than picks, which generally portends taking NFL-ready players with lower risk instead of taking chances on more unproven or marginal prospects. Houston did not buy into that wisdom, for better or worse.
Second Owner Will Properly Use Carr?
Houston did a poor job of taking care of David Carr. For one, a quarterback typically is only as good as the parts around him. Houston failed in customizing a quality offense around Carr.
2006 NFL Team Preview: Houston Texans
Can a team go two years in a row getting just two forced turnovers from their defensive front 7? Can a QB get pressured on an astounding 63% of his pass attempts (the league average is 41%) two seasons in a row and now get broken? Can a 2-14 team bring in a pretty solid draft class and a whole new organizational culture, plus a few key veteran leaders and performers, and not win more than 2 games again? You’re about to find out. But it doesn’t look positive. They’ll compete with Buffalo for worst team in the AFC and might luck into 3 wins.
Everything Is Going According To Plan
As argued in “Exit Interview,” the Texans primary concern is defense, and Reggie Bush would not be the silver bullet to right the ship. Mario Williams, the 2006 draft’s first selection overall, is considered by some to be as good as Julius Peppers. Peppers turned the Carolina Panthers’ defense upside down as they came within three points of a Super Bowl victory. If Williams is that kind of impact player, the Texans’ front office may have made the right choice.
Exit Interview
The Texans lost 20-17 (in OT) Sunday to arguably a worse team, the 49ers. There was a dark cloud hovering over coach Dom Capers all season, and since owner Bob McNair promised him clemency till the end of the season, I expected an ouster soon from an owner serious about winning. I knew they would serve us the usual platitudes in the press conference, but I wanted the real scoop on the team, to find out what McNair would say to Capers after a miserable season that fell well below of expectations.
Letting Reggie Slip From Their Hands
How bitter the brew of losing is. That made today’s 30-19 win against Arizona only a brief swig of the good stuff. Three previous weeks of narrow losses left Houston in a melancholy that sadly can’t be drowned in any drink—even with today’s win against a sorry, injured Arizona team.
Step Right Up, You Can Be The Next Rams QB
In a surprising exhibition of offensive firepower, our Texans were quick out the gates and punctuated an impressive first half with a late touchdown drive. David Carr connected with Corey Bradford and bodyslammed him to the ground in congratulations.
Texans Have A Long Way To Go
Despite its prime-time billing, the NFL in recent years has, with remarkable accuracy, picked some of the worst possible match-ups for its Monday and Sunday night broadcasts. Case in point: Sunday night’s humiliation of the Texans at Qwest Field in Seattle.
