Secret To Helping Vernon Davis? Keep It Simple

Sacramento Bee - 07/02 - 12:11 PM EST (AP Photo)
Vernon Davis has been one of the best blocking tight ends in the NFL since coming into the league, but he hasn't had great success as a receiver. His coaches at Maryland believe the 49ers need to keep things simpler for him.

"He's a guy who needs to face the quarterback and get some (yards after the catch)," said Dwight Galt, Maryland's strenght coach. "He's very good after he catches the ball."

Said Terps offensive coordinator James Franklin: "I would describe Vernon as more of an explosive athlete than a fluid athlete." [READ]
Calvin Pace Suspended Four Games
NFL.com - 07/02 - 4:15 PM EST
The NFL announced that it has given Jets LB Calvin Pace a four-game suspension for violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing substances.

Pace, who ranked second on the Jets with seven sacks last season, said in a statement released by the team that a supplement was to blame for a positive drug test.

“This is a situation that resulted from an over-the-counter dietary supplement that contained a substance that I did not know violated the league’s policy,” Pace said. “I am responsible for what I put into my body, and I should have paid closer attention to the league’s guidelines. I regret that this has happened and apologize to my teammates, the entire Jets organization as well as the fans. Hopefully, this does not distract from our ultimate goal of winning the Super Bowl.” [READ]
CFL Receiver Pretends To Be Buried In Tribute To Jackson
ESPN - 07/02 - 1:46 PM EST
Following a touchdown pass from Kerry Joseph that put the Toronto Argos ahead 6-0, Arland Bruce removed his helmet, shoulder pads and uniform top and laid down in the end zone. Bruce said he was honoring the memory of Michael Jackson by pretending to be buried.

Bruce received two objectionable conduct penalties.

"I made the mistake of telling him in camp that once he got to the end zone, I didn't care what he did," coach Bart Andrus said. "But he's straight with it now and I think next time around he will celebrate in an appropriate manner." [READ]
Teams Spend Offseason Preparing For Wildcat
FoxSports - 07/02 - 12:27 PM EST
After the success teams like the Miami Dolphins enjoyed with the formation last year, defensive coordinators have spent this offseason scheming and coaching ways to stop it.

"We've watched a bunch of that film," St. Louis head coach Steve Spagnuolo said.

Miami's coaching staff is salivating at the chance to put an NCAA record-setting dual run/pass threat, Pat White, in an expanded Wildcat package.

"I think they want to see what effect it will have on defenses and whether it will be effective," White said Tuesday from the NFL's Rookie Symposium in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. "I've got to do my job and get things done on my part. We'll see what happens from there." [READ]
Bears Remain $17.67M Under Cap
Chicago Sun-Times - 07/02 - 12:08 PM EST
The Bears remain $17.67 million under their adjusted salary-cap figure of $135.9 million, which means the organization has committed 86.99 percent of its cap to this point and there is plenty of room left over for spending.

Plaxico Burress is an unlikely option due to the penalty coming his was from the NFL.

This could become the perfect window for Chicago to come to a long term agreement with Jay Cutler.

Cutler remains under contract for three more seasons, but he has a $12 million roster bonus in 2012 that the team would probably like to avoid. [READ]

Miami Herald - 07/01 - 5:24 PM EST

"I'll be around until they kick me out," Taylor told the Miami Herald.

Hobbs Defends Patriots, Belichick
Boston Globe - 07/01 - 5:19 PM EST
Eagles cornerback Ellis Hobbs doesn't hold a grudge against the Patriots or coach Bill Belichick.

Hobbs was traded to Philadelphia for a pair of fifth-round picks during the second day of April's NFL Draft.

On Tuesday, he was asked by ESPN Radio's Colin Cowherd what the biggest misconception about the Patriots is.

"That we're all a bunch of jerks, starting with the head man, Bill," said Hobbs. "Bill will be the first to tell you he comes off as a jerk, intentionally. Because, I think, what he tries to manifest throughout the players is that we're here for football.

"There's so much going on – the circus in the media and all that stuff, and the hoopla in the NFL these days – it's hard to keep the focus on the game. I think that's why they have everything so distinguished, set apart from everything, as far as the organization away from the players. Where there's only access for the players on the lower level -- the players and the coaches. And I think by him doing that, it kind of sets the tone, and let's you know that we're here to play football and win games." [READ]

Romo Doesn't See Time For A Breather
Dallas Morning News - 07/01 - 5:10 PM EST
In addition to working out, Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo has been making charity appearances and playing golf in Tiger Woods.

"It's the same as every other week for me," Romo told the Dallas Morning News. "When I wake up in the morning, I still go throw, run and lift. That doesn't change no matter what time of the year it us. You do it year round. This isn't the time to take a break. It's time to make a push." [READ]
Green: Vick Will End Up With Dolphins
Miami Herald - 07/01 - 5:08 PM EST
Former NFL coach Dennis Green believes that Michael Vick will end up playing for the Dolphins.

"I have a hard time believing that Michael Vick is not going to wind up with Bill Parcells, simply because [Parcells] has that creativeness that says no matter what it takes, he's going to find a way to get Michael Vick," Green said on NFL Sirius Radio. "Now, whether it means convincing the commissioner or whatever it takes, Michael Vick is probably going to wind up at Miami because of the fact Bill Parcells is Bill Parcells."

Greg Cote of the Miami Herald wrote on Wednesday that "Vick to Miami will never happen." [READ]
Jenkins Sees Himself As Starting CB In Dallas
Dallas Morning News - 07/01 - 5:05 PM EST
Mike Jenkins considers himself the Cowboys' starting right cornerback, according to his blog.

Throughout OTAs, Jenkins and Orlando Scandrick split work with the first team while competing for the starting role.

"Heading into training camp, I'm the starter at right cornerback, and my job is to maintain that position," Jenkins' blog post read. "It's my job to lose, but there's a guy behind me with nothing to lose. If he makes a mistake, it's not going to cause him to lose his job. If I make a mistake, the coaches are going to take a long, hard look at me in that position."

Scandrick's agent, Rob Slavin, said Tuesday that Dallas has yet to make a decision.

"That's how they [Cowboys coaches] left it," Slavin said. "All people have to do is watch last year's film, and [Scandrick] is only getting bigger, stronger and faster." [READ]
Packers' Poppinga Becomes A High-Priced Reserve
Press Gazette - 07/01 - 5:01 PM EST
As of now, the Packers will pay linebacker Brady Poppinga $1.9 million this season to be a reserve.

A year after he signed a four-year, $13.4 million contract extension, Poppinga will head into training camp as a clear-cut backup.

Poppinga is behind Aaron Kampman, Jeremy Thompson and Clay Matthews on Green Bay's depth chart.

"That's something you'd have to ask the front office," Poppinga said during last week's mandatory minicamp when asked whether his salary could make him expendable.

"I don't know how they budget things out." [READ]

Pro Football Talk believes that the Vikings are close to announcing that they have an agreement in place with Brett Favre.

Minnesota coach Brad Childress has recently returned from a fishing trip in Alaska, and the team begins selling single-game tickets on July 9.

The Vikings struggled to sell out several games last season, and the announcement of Favre joining the team would boost sales. [READ]

Giants Will Put More Pressure On Eli
New York Post - 07/01 - 9:04 AM EST
Giants general manager Jerry Reese says that the team is ready to put more pressure on the shoulders of quarterback Eli Manning.

"We're going to put more of the onus on him," Reese told the New York Post.

Manning doesn't appear to be worried about taking a greater leadership role with the club, something he has slowly been doing since Tiki Barber's retirement.

"I think you got a quarterback going into his sixth year and ... some young receivers," Manning told The Post Tuesday. "It's my job to make sure those guys are on the same page and my job to be a leader and take control of the offense and the passing game.

"As a quarterback you're always going to be a leader, but now I'm one of the older guys on the offense." [READ]
McGinest Considers Return To Patriots
Boston Herald - 07/01 - 9:00 AM EST
Veteran linebacker Willie McGinest is considering the Patriots as a possible destination.

McGinest, a free agent, has expressed a desire to play one more season in the NFL.

"Yeah, I've talked to (quarterback) Tom (Brady), (defensive end Richard) Seymour and some other guys there," the 15-year veteran said. "Those guys are lifelong friends, and I've heard some people say that it'd be a good fit. Why wouldn't you want to be a part of that? And with all the history I have, what we accomplished in the playoffs, that wouldn't be a bad way to finish up." [READ]

Vick will be working with children on health and fitness activities at several clubs in the Hampton Roads area.

"We were disappointed by some of his recent actions and decisions but believe he has learned from these experiences and is now conscious of his obligations and responsibilities as a prominent sports figure that impacts and influences our kids," Stephen Kast, CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Virginia Peninsula, said in a written statement.
