The Pittsburgh Steelers are not expected to pick up Justin Fields' $25 million fifth-year option, according to league sources.
A first-round draft pick in 2021, Fields was traded to the Steelers by the Chicago Bears last month for a conditional sixth-round pick.
Hines Ward has been hired as Arizona State's next wide receivers coach, the school announced Sunday.
"I am truly honored to join Arizona State University football as wide receivers coach," Ward, the Super Bowl XL MVP and two-time Super Bowl champion, said in a statement Sunday. "It's an incredible opportunity to share my passion for the game with a group of talented young men and help them reach their full potential. The culture and energy here in the Valley is special and I can't wait to be part of it."
Pat Freiermuth says Russell Wilson is already building a relationship with Pittsburgh Steelers' wide receivers.
"I was just down there in San Diego with him working out and throwing routes," the tight end said. "He's been great at talking to guys and starting to build that connection. He's a great guy. You can tell the drive and determination that he has to win and come to Pittsburgh and win some playoff games for us. I think he is going to fit our culture and locker room very well."
Freiermuth revealed that wide receivers Calvin Austin and Van Jefferson were also part of the session in Southern California.
Justin Fields had four teams on his radar when it became apparent that the Chicago Bears would trade him.
Fields landed with one of those teams, the Pittsburgh Steelers, but the quarterback also had interested in joining the Atlanta Falcons, Las Vegas Raiders and Minnesota Vikings.
Entering the 2024 season with a brand-new quarterback room, Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said Russell Wilson will have the "pole position," but 2021 first-round pick Justin Fields will "have the opportunity to compete" when the time is right.
"We've been very transparent about the pecking order, at least to start," Tomlin said Sunday from the NFL's league meetings, addressing the team's free agency additions for the first time. "I just think that provides clarity for all parties involved. Russell is a veteran, man. He's got a proven process of readiness. He's been in this league a long time. He's capable of rallying troops, receivers, tight ends, running backs, et cetera. He's just got a lot of experience in terms of what it takes to be the guy over the course of a 12-month calendar and I just think that that's something that a younger guy like Justin could learn from."
The Pittsburgh Steelers and Russell Wilson expect to come to terms on a longer contract after the 2024 season, according to a report.
The news broke shortly after the Steelers acquired Justin Fields in a trade with the Chicago Bears.
Wilson signed a one-year veteran's minimum salary deal of $1.21 million for the 2023 season. The Denver Broncos will pay him $39 million to not have him on the roster.
The Chicago Bears are trading quarterback Justin Fields to the Pittsburgh Steelers for a 2025 6th-round pick that can convert into a fourth-round pick based on playtime, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Saturday.
Fields joins a quarterback room that just added quarterback Russell Wilson and lost Kenny Pickett in a trade with the Eagles.
